“Sacrifice Your Comfort for Success” - Noel Powers

The Like a Boss program at JOG offers our students (and staff) the opportunity to engage directly with our partners on a variety of topics. This can range from direct information into a field, the story of the employer and tips on how to succeed like they did, and even some more broad advice that can apply to a variety of career paths in the future. In one of our Like a Boss sessions, Noel Powers spoke on how online messaging and communication is key to building your future.

Initially, Noel started off by encouraging students to “Sacrifice your comfort for success,” but what does that look like? Starting anything can be hard, even if it is something you are good at! Noel explained that we all have the “ability to dive into our interests online in ways that weren’t available as recently as 20 years ago.” One way that students can do this is through avenues in social media. YouTube communities, campus discussion forums/subreddits and Facebook Groups which are great ways to meet other people who share common interests. Noel expressed, “You can learn more from YouTube than you can imagine. Decide where you want to be and look into how you can improve those skills.”

You can expand your knowledge of your favorite topics and learn from those who have been in the same circles. Over time, these online experiences can build your knowledge on how to “sell” your hobbies through digital messaging whether you realize it or not. By diving into your hobbies through digital messaging, these new skills can become a job! That could look like becoming a social media manager, a copywriter, an online customer service agent, or an influencer. Brands that work in the industry that interest you will always need to be able to find new ways to sell what they do. Whether that is selling tools, or booking talent at a music venue, or even becoming a campus tour guide at a college, it’s all messaging.

As Noel taught JOG, breaking out of your comfort zone is key to growing. Expanding your horizons through learning more about your hobbies lets you learn how to “sell” something easier. Because at the end of the day growth comes from embracing discomfort and that’s the only way to grow!
