Student Success Story: Miah

04/29/2024

We all run into difficulty in life, whether they involve subjects we struggle with, family problems, and anything in between. At the end of the day, these challenges present opportunities to grow and become a better person! Miah is a JOG student who faced her challenges and with the help of her Career Specialist, Heidi Phillips, she was able to make significant strides.

Miah joined the JOG program as a sophomore seeking guidance. She struggled with interpersonal relationships, both with family and with friends and had issues with how to cope. On top of this she dated a boy that was repeatedly disrespectful to her. Her grades suffered, and so did her mental health. This took a turn for the best with the help of her Career Specialist, Heidi Phillips. Heidi talked about the concept of “Let them” a lot during their one-on-ones. She elaborated, “One of our ‘famous quotes’ is “Let Them” because every time she was upset about people talking about her or needless drama, I simply said that. Let them talk.  Let them act foolish. How are YOU going to act, though?”

Miah was kicked out from her mom’s house and moved in with her dad, who had issues of his own struggles. These problems compounded and made Miah’s life tougher. Miah faced having to move back into her mom’s house after she was ordered to return. Through all of this, Heidi was able to give more helpful guidance. From this assistance, Miah and her mom were able to build a better relationship with stronger communication. She also returned to counseling and was prescribed some medication that would help her. Heidi explained, “Miah started to thrive, and we were so happy to have her here at JOG.”

We are happy to say that Miah is finishing up her Senior year! She has really blossomed as a mentor for younger participants and laughs sometimes as she remembers the drama from her sophomore year. She works to help them become their best selves. Miah is proud of overcoming her obstacles with the help of Heidi and is ecstatic for what comes next. Currently, she is saving up to buy her very own house! We are glad to see the leaps Miah has been able to make and are happy with the self-help she has been able to find with JOG!
