Student Success Stories: Asebel

Students at Tri-County Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) come from a plethora of backgrounds. In the case of Asebel, she came to us looking to obtain her GED while also being a mother. These challenges are something that our Career Specialists work on to help accommodate our students so they can gain their GED while also being able to still put their families first.

“Despite being a young mother, Asebel realized the importance of completing her high school education,” said Betty Miller, Asebel’s Career Specialist. She found a way to juggle having young children with her new venture into obtaining her GED. According to Betty, “She was seen holding and tending to her children while still managing to participate and learn different concepts.”

Asebel was able to do this through JOG’s Out-of-School program. This JOG program allows students to go to class via Zoom through classes taught by our very own Career Specialists. These classes also don’t end when the time runs out. Career Specialists work to help accommodate everyone’s needs through tutoring and one-on-one availability to discuss topics that prove difficult. This program is influenced by the Jobs for America’s Graduates, or JAG, model. This model outlines how our students are taught through competency-based classroom instruction, whether in a classroom or via Zoom.

Asebel was able to achieve what she set her sights on and got her GED in June of 2022. Though she was very proud of this goal she was not done yet. She began working with JOG staff to help her find a career path that she found rewarding. Currently, she is building her career and is able to push towards her own dreams while also making enough money to support her family. Though she has moved out of the county, we still keep in contact with her in case there is anything she needs moving forward.

We are very proud of the leaps that Asebel has made toward both her GED and her career. Going through the process to obtain your GED is no small thing. Her hard work brought her to where she is today, and through the help of JOG’s out-of-school program team, she has been able to make her dream a reality.
