Student Success Story: Miah

10/27/2023

One of the best things about working at Tri-County Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) is being able to help our students achieve their dreams. From helping our students realize what pathways they want to follow, to getting connected with real-world companies in those professions, JOG works to get our students started on the road to their goals as empowered young adults. Our Career Specialist, Matt Turner was able to do just that with his student Miah.

Miah came to us with a handful of barriers in her path to success. She was going through some family challenges as well as trying to navigate life as a single mother. When Miah began her time in the JOG program, she was looking for help in gaining employability skills and getting into a career. Since she had already graduated high school, Matt was able to work on ways to help Miah build a fresh, revamped resume, presenting herself in the best light for future employers. Matt explained, “we synthesized the experiences that she has up until this point, and we were able to provide her with a new resume.”

After the resume was completed Matt and Miah took some time and explored possible career pathways specifically for her. She decided that she wanted to pursue becoming an EMT. With a pathway decided, they jumped right into the matching process. Matt and Miah started looking into EMT programs and how Mia could gain firsthand experience in her field. Matt elaborated, “we contacted local EMT companies, and inquired about shadow opportunities so that she could see what it was all about.”

We at JOG are happy to report that Miah is currently working towards her goal of becoming an EMT and eventually branch off into the greater health care field. Seeing where she started and where she is now through her own efforts is something she can be proud of for the rest of her life. It isn’t easy to get started on your goals, but Miah is now well on her way. We are very proud of Miah and her drive to achieve her goals. We are excited to see where the future takes her in her endeavors as an EMT.
