JOG the Web: Summer Work

3/31/2023

Employment is a top priority here at Tri-County Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG). We work with our participants to promote learning about different work environments by helping them find in-field work experiences with real-world employers. It’s through close partnerships that we are able to supply work experiences to participants interested in applicable career paths.

The main question we get about summer work is, “what is the difference between summer work and standard employment?”

The two major differences are the length of employment and how the participants are paid. Most summer work is exactly that: work only performed over the summer. These employers bring in our students for their help while school is out of session so the employers can get extra “hands on deck” while participants gain valuable experience and explore potential career paths before most of their peers are given the chance.

When it comes to how they are paid, that is handled by the JOG program. These work experiences are supplied through what we call “subsidized work.” This means that the JOG participant goes to work with their specific company placement, but their hourly pay is supplied by JOG. This takes away the financial stress of paying more employees for employers.  Since some of our participants have financial needs they have to meet in their lives, this program opens the gate for participants to have the chance to try the industry with limited to no risk on their part. It’s a win for everyone involved.

This year, we have taken a student interest poll to identify industries of interest and recruit applicable employers. Results came back ranging from mechanics to marketing and even healthcare, alongside others. This poll will help us collect the right employers in the right fields so JOG participants are given a leg up in their respective industry interests. Because we work across Summit, Stark, Medina, and Trumbull Counties, we work to connect with employers across each county that fits the needs of participants in their area, as well.

We are proud to be able to provide such a unique experience to both out employment partners and our participants. Programs like these are truly what helps set JOG students apart.
